Job summary
This is a substantive Band 8A Advanced Practice role within a forward-thinking, multidisciplinary team. You will work with a high level of clinical autonomy while being fully supported through:
- Consultant Physiotherapist
- Robust governance from the Consultant Spinal Surgical Group
- Regular MDT working across North Devon and Exeter sites
You will play a key role in delivering expert assessment, diagnosis, and management of complex spinal and MSK conditions, while contributing to pathway development across primary and secondary care.
The Orthopaedic Spinal Service is central to ensuring patients receive the right care, at the right time, in the right place, reducing unnecessary surgical referrals and improving patient outcomes across the system.

Our ACDC service delivers a wide range of specialist treatments and procedures, including:
- Blood transfusions
- Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) therapy
- Iron infusions
- Intravenous antibiotics
- Venesections
- IV magnesium and zoledronic acid treatments
- PICC, Hickman and Portacath care
- Short Synacthen tests
- Prolactin and routine blood testing
We work closely with a variety of specialist services, including the Seamoor Unit, Acute Hospital at Home (AHAH), Haematology, Rheumatology and Gastroenterology teams, as well as local GP surgeries and the Eden Unit at Derriford. Together, we ensure patients can access specialist treatments closer to home whilst receiving exceptional, individualised care.
Applicants must be able to demonstrate current competence in peripheral venous cannulation and intravenous medication/infusion administration, with recent experience delivering IV therapies in a clinical setting.
As a Staff Nurse within ACDC, you will:
- Deliver specialist day treatments safely and effectively in line with service protocols.
- Assess, support and provide holistic nursing care to patients and their families.
- Develop expertise in a wide range of infusion therapies and specialist procedures.
- Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team to ensure high standards of patient care.

Additional Information

We are looking for passionate, dynamic and inspired nurses to join us. Our Community Nursing teams are based in Osprey House, Exeter and we provide care across the locality of the city.
It is therefore vital you are an adaptive and flexible worker throughout the day. You are expected to work occasional weekends and bank holidays as we provide a 7-day service but this during the core business hours of the day.
How a Day in community Nursing looks;
You will start the day with the support of the daily virtual hub meeting (including all the nursing teams in your cluster) to plan an effective and safe list of patient visits for the day.
Then you meet later with your nursing team at patient safety handover to support each other through any concerns or advice for patient treatments or conditions as a team. Both of which are integral to our day to ensure staff work safely and within their own skill set and expertise.
The rest of your working day you could be lone working or supervising Unregistered or Student Nurses through their clinical skills, patient risk assessments and documentation.
Newly appointed staff will be provided with a comprehensive induction into Community Nursing and will work alongside other nursing staff to ensure they are supported into the post robustly.
Staff are supported with supervision both in team meetings or a one to one basis. This is also integral to our work and considered a priority to support staff at work both to develop professionally but also to support your health and wellbeing and provide a safe environment to discuss professional matters.
If you work with us there are plenty of opportunities for training and acquiring qualifications. This can either be modular based academic work, clinically focused and related to the role, leadership qualifications or the Specialist Nurse Practitioner Qualification at Master's level over two years. The work Community Nurses do is hugely varied so your portfolio of clinical skills can grow in complex and advanced nursing competence. Our core work includes Palliative care, supporting people at home with complex and long-term conditions, administering medications, advanced tissue viability and vascular access.
We work closely with the wider community MDT to promote admission avoidance and empowering patients to stay at home to receive their nursing care. We work very closely with our GP, Hospice, Physio and Occupational Therapy, Social Work, Voluntary and Urgent Care Services.

You must be a car driver and have use of a car. A mileage allowance is as per Agenda for Change. Currently, in all bases there is free parking however, this may be open to change.

The post holder will be based at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital in an outpatient clinical setting. They will be expected to independently travel to community locations on a weekly basis. The post holder will fulfil all tasks and work as part of a team. To meet the needs of the service the post holder may be required to work in other locations as appropriate and directed. They are expected to have a BSc. Audiology or equivalent qualification. They are expected to be registered with the HCPC or AHCS professional body.
The post holder is expected to perform duties and responsibilities to a high standard as follows:
Clinical Duties
- Understands and adheres to up-to-date BSA recommended procedures and departmental policies
- Makes accurate decisions and onward referrals to radiology imaging
- Writes accurate reports and develops individual management plans for every patient
- Able to give presentations to multi-disciplinary teams
- Accurately inform the referring health professional/Doctor of the diagnosis and the future care package of the patient
- Accurately records and communicates the results to the patient/family/carers based on the referral from, ENT consultant, General practitioners, and other professional groups.
- Gain support of the other professional groups in establishing care plans and monitor the suitability of the plan at key stages.
- Make further referrals to other professionals as appropriate
- Assistance in counselling patients/families/carers through highly distressing and emotional circumstances
- Prescription fitting evaluation and exchange of non-standard hearing aids including CROS aids and Bone Anchored Hearing Aids for both adults, using procedures such as real ear insitu measurements.
- To provide appropriate assessment and specialist tinnitus management strategies for patients with bothersome and non-bothersome tinnitus.
Non Clinical Duties
- Assist in the day to day running of the department and may include specific clinical or departmental responsibility.
- Support the senior management team with day to day management of the department.
- Participates regularly in the departments on-going research and development activity
- Maintains knowledge and understanding of developments within Audiology and the work environment and ensures continual professional development

The post holder is expected to perform duties and responsibilities to a high standard as follows:
Clinical Duties
- Understands and adheres to up-to-date BSA recommended procedures and departmental policies
- Makes accurate decisions and onward referrals to radiology imaging
- Writes accurate reports and develops individual management plans for every patient
- Able to give presentations to multi-disciplinary teams
- Accurately inform the referring health professional/Doctor of the diagnosis and the future care package of the patient
- Accurately records and communicates the results to the patient/family/carers based on the referral from, ENT consultant, General practitioners, and other professional groups.
- Gain support of the other professional groups in establishing care plans and monitor the suitability of the plan at key stages.
- Make further referrals to other professionals as appropriate
- Assistance in counselling patients/families/carers through highly distressing and emotional circumstances
- Prescription fitting evaluation and exchange of non-standard hearing aids including CROS aids and Bone Anchored Hearing Aids for both adults, using procedures such as real ear insitu measurements.
- To provide appropriate assessment and specialist tinnitus management strategies for patients with bothersome and non-bothersome tinnitus.
Non Clinical Duties
- Assist in the day to day running of the department and may include specific clinical or departmental responsibility.
- Support the senior management team with day to day management of the department.
- Participates regularly in the departments on-going research and development activity
- Maintains knowledge and understanding of developments within Audiology and the work environment and ensures continual professional development
- Performs other duties as requested by the Head of Department or Associate Head of Audiology.
Working Pattern: 8AM-6PM OVER 4 DAYS
