Job summary

We are seeking a friendly, organised and patient- focused Receptionist to join our team at Hatherton Medical Centre, part of Umbrella Medical in Walsall.

This is a varied and rewarding front-line role where you will be the first point of contact for patients, providing a welcoming and professional service both face-to-face and over the telephone. You will play a key role in supporting the smooth day-to-day running of the practice, working closely with clinicians and colleagues to deliver high-quality patient care.

The role requires excellent communication and interpersonal skills, along with the ability to remain calm and professional in a busy environment. You will need to be adaptable, reliable, and able to work both independently and as part of a team.

Both part-time and full-time applications will be considered. The role involves working scheduled shifts between 7:15am and 6:30pm, Monday to Friday. Flexibility is essential and shift patterns will be allocated based on service requirements. Once agreed, the successful candidate will work a regular, set shift pattern each week. Applicants should only apply if they are able to work within the advertised operating hours, including covering opening and closing times. (8:00am - 6:30pm)

Although you will predominantly be based at our Hatherton Medical Centre site, you may be asked to cover at any of the Umbrella Practices for training & development or to cover in times of sickness or annual leave.

Main duties of the job

Patient & Reception Duties

  • Welcoming patients at the front desk
  • Answering and directing telephone calls
  • Booking and managing appointments
  • Handling patient queries in a professional, caring manner

Administration Duties

  • Processing prescriptions and requests
  • Scanning and filing documents
  • Maintaining accurate patient records
  • Entering data onto clinical systems (EMIS web experience an advantage)

Team Support

  • Supporting clinicians and colleagues
  • Assisting with general administrative tasks
  • Working flexibly to meet service needs

You will be expected to:

  • Manage your workload effectively

  • Handle sensitive situations with professionalism and empathy

PLEASE NOTE:

Shortlisted candidates are required to attend a Recruitment Event where they'll demonstrate communication, customer service and organisational skills through hands on tasks and group challenges. The session runs for around three hours, and top performers will progress to interview.

Recruitment Events will take place w.c. 19th October 2026, with interviews arranged on separate dates soon after.
